  • Composite decking is intended to be installed directly to the structural joists. DO NOT fasten our composite decking planks to the top of old existing deck planks or balcony and porch floors.

  • Household pressure washers with spray nozzle may be used to remove stains, ground in dirt, or mold but risks to spray particles of soap on other surfaces. If you choose to use a pressure washer please keep at least a distance of 30cm between the power jet and the deck board surface.

  • Absolutely. Green Plank composite decking boards do not absorb water and has been used extensively near pools, spas and in marine environments around the world.

  • Let’s take these issues in order. First, composite decking contains wood, either sawdust or ground wood or other natural fiber. That material can absorb liquids such as oil, and the result can be a stain. Even top brands decking can stain if oil, paint, juice or other liquids aren’t quickly cleaned up.

    Composite decking typically fades slightly, if at all, in the first season. After that, the color becomes stable. Though Green Plank is working constantly to improve UV protection in its products to reduce or eliminate fading.

    Finally, composite decking will scratch if heavy objects such as furniture are dragged across it. Even sharp pet claws and sand can cause scratching just like wooden decking. However, the scratches are typically superficial, and with time, they blend. To prevent scratches, pick up deck furniture when moving it, and broom loose dirt off the decking regularly to prevent abrasions to the composite decking.

    Another way to stop furniture from damaging your composite decking floor is to invest in protective cups, mats or pads. Once you’ve bought them, make sure you place them under all table and chair legs which come in contact with your decking floor. The introduction of these protective cups, mats or pads will stop your furnishings from having direct contact with your deck and will help stop your furniture from damaging your decking floor.

    Some of our customers have used small/medium grit sandpaper to treat minor scratches or scuff marks. If the stains have set on planks, you may also want to use a fine sandpaper and sand lightly followed by a wire brush to re-grain the decking. Always follow the wood grain finish of the plank. The sanded area will weather back in approximately 8-10 weeks but can very depending on location and specific application.

  • In most communities, a building permit is required to build a deck. The main reason is to ensure the safety of anyone who uses the structure. There have been many unfortunate instances in which decks, stairs or railings that were built with poor design or materials have collapsed, causing injury or death. Most commonly in such cases, the required deck permit was not obtained. When a deck building permit isn’t obtained and something goes wrong, the homeowner is subject to civil and criminal penalties. It makes sense to obtain planning permission from the local building department, so the deck can be inspected as a means of protecting you and others.

  • Wooden or Composite Decking boards, all move, but in different directions and for different reasons. Composites decking expands more in length, while wooden decking expands across its width. Composite decking moves mostly because of heat, while wood decking moves as its moisture content changes. Both types of movement are functions of nature and aren’t easily overcome.

    Composite decking, cladding or fencing boards change size with temperature, shrink as the temperature drops and expand as it increases. The change happens at a uniform rate that doesn’t depend on direction, except that it’s noticed more over the length simply because the boards are longer than they are wide. In cold weather, miter joints in composite tend to gap. In hot weather, the pressure from expanding boards may tighten the miter joints, or wedge them open.

    Wood acts differently. As its moisture content changes, wood expands or shrinks across the width of the board. This causes the miter joint to open at the toe (the pointy end of the cut) or the heel (the not-so-pointy end of the cut). Which part of the miter joint will open is related directly to the moisture content of the boards when they are installed. A wet board will dry out, causing the heel to open up. A dry board will expand as it takes on moisture, causing the toe to open up.

  • All exterior surfaces collect dirt, dust and contaminants. It is necessary to clean them periodically to keep them looking good. Green Plank® wood composites are low-maintenance products, not no-maintenance products.

    Periodic cleaning of Green Plank® composite products are suggested, even if they appear clean, it is important to prevent the build-up of pollen/debris that can cause mold.

    We recommend a basic cleaning with a composite deck cleaner or combination of soap (dishwashing detergent) , hot water and a soft bristle brush. After cleaning rinse thoroughly. If unsure about the product being used to clean/ remove stains from your deck, it is recommended that you test a small area in an inconspicuous place to determine if the product will cause any unwanted discoloration.

    Hose off the entire deck with a garden hose and not with a pressure washer. The pressure washer will spray particles of soap on other surfaces, possibly causing staining. Using a garden hose is a better practice to gently rinse off homemade cleaner and get rid of all water spots.

  • Green Plank composite products performs well in changing weather conditions. During installation, it will contract only slightly in cold weather but does expand in hot weather. We recommend that you let the material acclimate on the job site for 48 hours prior to installation. Follow the spacing guidelines in the Installation Guide to accommodate any expansion and contraction.

  • Whether decking boards shrinks or swells depends on the material used to build the deck. Wood that isn’t pressure treated will definitely expand and contract when wet. When it dries, the wood will shrink. These cycles will eventually cause wood decking to warp and crack. This is even true of cedar decking and redwood decking as it ages.

    Composite decking doesn’t absorb moisture, but it does expand and contract in the length with the temperature variation.

    It's important to read our installation guide before installing Green Plank composite decking material. When it gets warm, it expands more than wood along its length but less across its width. The longer the decking board, the greater its expansion and the more you have to account for this when building your deck. Check the product's end-gap chart (head-to-head), which describes the space needed between the ends of two decking boards with the length of each board, the temperature during installation, and the highest ambient temperature you expect in the deck area. For example, a 5 meters long composite deck board installed at 10 degrees Celsius could expand by as much as 3 mm on each end of the board, so you'll need minimum 6 mm gap between the ends of two decking boards.

  • If you intend to store Green Plank composite products prior to construction, products should be stored indoors under cover to maintain a clean surface. If items are to be stored outside should be properly sheltered to prevent direct interference from sunlight, rain, moisture etc. The product must be close stacked in the shade, clear of the ground on levelled bearers (300mm), they should be stored on a level surface such as a concrete floor. Products need to be stored in a manner that prevents sagging and permits free air circulation.

    One of the biggest factors in the choice of composite fencing vs. wood is the budget. Since wooden fences are initially cheaper than composite wood fences.

    Wooden fence, you’ll need to maintain and even repair or replace areas of the wood that have rotted. You’ve got to stain and paint the wood in a finish that will withstand the elements. In most climates you’ll have to do this annually to preserve the life of the fence, but in harsh nordic climate it’ll have to be done more frequently.
